Issued throughout the 1960's, greatcoats such as this example were increasingly used for ceremonial wear rather than day to day operations throughout the Vietnam War. The American military force went through a great many changes over the course of the Vietnamese \"intervention\". Often these were relatively needless, either being designed for a more modern look, one-upmanship between the various branches or simply as a way to spend their budget. That being said, overcoats such as this one stay true to the first proper uniforms issued when the USAF was founded in 1947.
