Grades

How our grading works & Why individual listings matter.

After half a decade handling surplus, we've learned that standardizing items with a prior history is challenging. You deserve to know precisely what you're getting when ordering with us. Therefore, if we have fewer than 50 of a particular style, we list each item individually. From detailed photographs to a clear description of its condition, every piece is hand-selected. This allows you to see any variations, such as slight colour differences from different production years (common with older Eastern Bloc gear) or variety in camouflage patterns, or any repairs or minor wear like scuffed buttons. This way, you can be confident in exactly what you're receiving when ordering online.

Beyond showing you individual differences, we also measure each item. This ensures a much more precise fit than you'd get by simply selecting a standard size elsewhere. This is particularly important for ceremonial items, which often have had previous alterations that differ from the original label.

To clarify, our "grades" indicate the item's condition. We generally use 4 main categories:

  • Unissued: Completely new, often still in its original packaging.
  • Supergrade: Usually like new but may not have the original packaging.
  • Grade 1: Often shows signs of previous ownership, but pieces that are likely ready to wear, but we always clearly point out any specific flaws. We sometimes use "Grade 1.5" for minor issues like a missing button, and this will always be noted in the individual listing.
  • Grade 2 / Original Condition: These are typically older items with a significant history and plenty of character. They might require some restoration, or if you appreciate a more worn aesthetic, this is the category for you. We include numerous photos with these listings to showcase any notable aspects of their condition.

So, feel confident in knowing what you see is what you get with every single one of our listings, not just another generic item number, but a piece of history, with its own lovely history! However if something doesn't seem clear, you can always reach out to usĀ here!

What is Army Surplus?

Simply put, army surplus is leftover or outdated stock that was once meant for or used by military, naval, air force, police, and other government defense organizations. For the most part, army surplus items are used, making the experience similar to buying vintage clothing from platforms like Depop or your local vintage shop. These items often have many good years of life left and are usually ready to wear. Because they had to meet strict government standards before full production, you can be confident in their quality. Army surplus is a sustainable, incredibly reliable, and durable option, especially great for those who enjoy the outdoors without wanting to spend a fortune.

Another interesting aspect of army surplus is its limited availability. Because it's often outdated or excess stock, the chances of that exact product being in active production again are slim to none. So, stock is finite! While we always try to restock popular items, it's not guaranteed. Everything sold here is genuine, not a reproduction (unless in very rare cases, which will always be clearly stated).

It's important to remember that these items have typically been in long-term storage before reaching us, often in warehouses that can impart a "dusty" smell. While the items are in great condition, not being stored in warm retail environments or shipped directly from production lines means this is sometimes unavoidable. We do our best to freshen items up, but with the volume we handle, a deep clean of every piece isn't always feasible. For most items with a slight scent, a quick wash or two usually does the trick. Larger coats might require dry cleaning.

Some items might have never been issued or used, but they've still likely been in storage for a while hence our grading system.
