Beautiful vintage West German surplus that has stunning, sleek, timeless look. These are winter general issue in the Bundesmarine, and have been for several decades. Even now the design of these greatcoats has hardly changed because of its superb. Made from gabardine these overcoats offer amazing windproofing and hold up incredibly well in rain, although not entirely waterproof.
For features, there's a few nice touches. The first being the liner which helps as a body warmer and can easily be zipped out for warmer weather. The front closure can be buttoned up either side. There's also the 2 flap waist pockets, both offering decent space inside. Then there's the interior slit chest pocket which is great for IDs, wallets, lighters etc. And of course it is worth highlighting the endearing engraved buttons. Even on the back, each golden button has a quaint anchor engraved in.
For our own experience with these coats we've found it only positive. With a lesser grade piece we decided to rework it slightly because there were quite a few buttons missing as well as tears. So those got swapped to brown marble buttons instead and it has served very well ever since. It's particularly nice on autumn or spring days. It's smart, timeless and great quality.
The coats come entirely in black, depending on manufacturing year, the hue changes slightly but is never far off. The gold brass buttons contrast against the coat beautifully. The liner inside is split colour wise between a black sateen / polyester top and a blue checkered tartan bottom.
